She has received numerous awards including a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in 1977 the Native American Prize for Literature for her life's work (1990), the Susan Koppleman Award (twice) and the Before Columbus Foundation National Book Award. Gunn Allen's recent publications include, 'Skins and Bones,' 'Song of the Turtle: American Indian Literature 1974-1995,' 'Life is a Fatal Disease: Collected Poems 1968-1995,' 'Off the Reservation: Reflections on Boundary-Busting, Border Crossing Loose Canons' and 'Hozho: Walking in Beauty,' with Carolyn Dunn Anderson. Gunn Allen is widely cited as an authoritative source in works on American Indian literature, women's issues, and eco-conscious spirituality. She has devoted much of lecturing and teaching to creative writing, holding numerous workshops and seminars throughout the United States and Canada. Her work was central to the foundation of American Indian literary studies, and her courses have focused on a variety of subjects relating to American Indian studies, including history in the United States, culture, American Indian women, traditional medicine and earth sciences, as well as a number of graduate and undergraduate courses on American Indian literature, particularly contemporary poetry and fiction. Her essays, fiction and poetry have been published worldwide in a variety of journals and book-length publications. Gunn Allen is currently emerita professor of English, American Indian studies and creative writing at UCLA. The series is being held in conjunction with a graduate seminar taught by Professor Luci Tapahonso and celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the American Indian Studies Program at the University of Arizona.
